Abstract English

"The rapid emergence of the novel coronavirus (now called SARS-Cov-2, causing the disease known currently as COVID-19)
has brought the world to a standstill. The transmissibility and associated morbidity and mortality of this virus are
overwhelming some healthcare systems already, resulting in an urgent need to understand this virus and its associated
effects better. At present pharyngeal swabs are the most commonly used tests to diagnose the virus. However, technically,
getting the sampling stick through trans-nasal or trans-oral routes can be uncomfortable to many patients and in certain
circumstances inconvenient as well as it can put health care professional at high risk of exposure. Preliminary data showed
that in some patients viral shedding can be higher in stool samples compared to pharyngeal and nasal swabs and in
certain circumstances positive in stool sample and negative in pharyngeal swabs. Based on that there is a pressing need to
identify other laboratory investigations that can decrease the rate of false negative test results, involve no need for health care professionals to get the samples (thus reducing personal exposed to the virus), and in certain circumstances more
convenient to patients. Also, there is a need to identify a tool or a composite of tools that can help summarize the enteric
manifestation of COVID-19 and the temporal pattern of fecal shedding of the SARS-COV-2 which will help us quantify
the risk associated with performing endoscopy and gastrointestinal surgical interventions and thus instigate necessary
precautions. We believe, to our knowledge, our study will be the first with enough sample size to better inform public health
officials and policy makers both locally and internationally about how to identify virus carriers with much better precision
and accuracy than we currently do and thus limiting the spread of the disease in our community and the world."
