Abstract English

The major aim of this research proposal will be to develop and formulate a commercially viable polymer waste/virgin blend nanocomposite, utilizing locally produced polymer waste and virgin polymers that is suitable for blending and modifying with locally produced bitumen. To overcome and minimize failure of bituminous pavement due to heavy traffic and related weather conditions, a great effort has been made lately to improve the material properties of bitumen, and polymer modification is considered to be one of the most suitable and popular approaches for that purpose. Nowadays, due to the recent global environmental rules and regulations imposed by many countries to manage the waste, particularly plastic waste, which poses serious environmental pollution, the momentum for using recycled polymer waste as a material of choice for bitumen blends has increased. Hence, using recycled polymer waste as a bitumen modifier for road and pavement applications provides various environmental, technical, and economic benefits and it could potentially enhance the bitumen performance. In this investigation, a blend of selected polymer waste and related virgin polymers that are locally produced will be blended and further modified via the addition of different types of additives, compatibilizer, and montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclay filler, which will then be compounded together using the extrusion process. The produced polymer waste/virgin nanocomposite formulations will be characterized in terms of mechanical, thermal, rheological, and morphological properties. Finally, the developed polymer waste/virgin nanocomposite formulations at various dosages will be blended with locally sourced bitumen produced by Kuwait National Petroleum Company. A number of promising polymer waste/virgin nanocomposite modified bitumen blends will be formulat
