Abstract English
Wave energy has a great potential to prosper as a renewable energy source replacing conventional fossil fuels. A wave energy
converter consists of three stages: First the wave energy is captured and converted into linear mechanical motion energy driving
a shaft. Next, the shaft mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy using an electrical machine (generator). If a rotating
generator is used, a linear-to-rotary actuator such as a ball screw, a rack and pinion or a scotch yoke system is required. Finally,
the produced electrical energy is connected to the electrical grid using power electronics converter. This project is divided into
two phases. In phase one, a novel linear-to-rotary magnetic actuator will be developed. The proposed actuator utilizes permanent
magnets to transmit mechanical power from a linear part (the slider) to a rotary part (the rotor). There is no mechanical contact
between the rotor and the slider which results in higher reliability and longer lifetime. The resulted linear motion in this
system in perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the rotor. The system will be modeled analytically and simulated using Finite
Element Method (FEM). Moreover, a prototype will be built to experimentally test the system. In parallel, an initial study will be
performed to evaluate integration schemes with other renewable and non-renewable energy sources to optimize on delivered
cost of electricity. This will include the assessment of energy storage on-board or offboard the wave energy conversion system. In
phase two, the grid-connected power electronics converter will be developed. The electrical energy produced by the generator is
AC with a variable frequency and variable voltage amplitude. In order to be connected to the grid, an AC-DC-AC power electronics
converter is required. At this point a final, optimized integration scheme for renewable and non-renewable energy sources will
be downselected and a scaled prototype system evaluation plan will be devised. Finally, the whole system will be integrated and
experimentally tested as a wave energy farm with multiple wave energy converters feeding the electrical grid.
