Pilot Study for Energy Generation from Sludge Using Anaerobic Treatment

Currently, the generated sludge from Kuwait wastewater treatment plants creates an environmental problem that gets worse with time, because it accumulates in the treatment plants without any further treatment or reuse applications. This leads to different environmental problems such as odour, underground water contamination and occupies a large area of the treatment plants. Treating wastewater consumes a massive amount of the costly energy. Using the new technologies, that are able to treat wastewater and generate energy from sludge, is one of the practical solutions to overcome sludge problems and convert it into an energy source. This proposal presents a pilot-testing of an anaerobic biological reactor (anaerobic digester unit) for energy generation (as a biogas) from sludge. The main aim of this study is to investigate and assess the potential of energy generation from anaerobic digestion of sludge generated in Kuwait. In addition, the study will determine the characterization of the produced sludge at the different wastewater treatment plants. This project is unique where new and renewable source of energy will be demonstrated in Kuwait. The pilot scale reactor will be installed at Kabd wastewater treatment plant to assess and demonstrate energy generation using anaerobic digester. The outcomes of this study will help decision makers to assess the potential of energy generation from sludge, and at the same time assess whether this reactor is applicable for Kuwait or not.
