Abstract English
The genus Zizyphus has several potentially useful multi-purpose tree species (MPTS) for landscape beautification, large-scale greenery development and commercial fruit production under arid growing conditions. For commercialising Zizyphus cultivation in Kuwait, immediate and systematic efforts are needed to select and naturalize suitable cultivars, develop locally adaptable efficient vegetative propagation techniques and appropriate production and post-production technologies. The areas requiring detailed investigations are too many to be resolved in a three-year duration of the project period. Furthermore, Zizyphus plants require nearly five to six years to attain the economic bearing age. Therefore, it is proposed to address the issues mentioned above in two phases, each of three years. During the first phase, the emphasis will be on locating promising lines from the local plantations, importing and testing of potential improved varieties/strains, locating lines with salt and disease tolerance and development of local expertise. The preliminary information generated will be utilized to formulate future research strategy for this crop. These issues will be addressed through five operational tasks. The anticipated output of the first phase include: expansion of Zizyphus germplasm resources, selection and utilization of promising local and imported genotypes; prioritised research needs in Zizyphus; creation of local expertise; and trained national manpower.
