Determining the prevalence of child maltreatment among adolescents in Kuwait

تشكل سلامة الأطفال جزء مهم من أهداف التنمية المستدامة لدى الأمم المتحدة. إساءة الأطفال قد تؤدي الي مشاكل صحية واجتماعية تساهم في العبء العالمي للأمراض. تشير الدراسات إلى أن مليار طفل في العالم قد تعرض للعنف في العام الماضي. في الكويت تشير الدراسات إلى أن العنف ضد الأطفال يحدث، وأظهرت دراسة أجريت في عام 2010 أن 35.6٪ و 53.5٪ و 19.8٪ من طلاب جامعة الكويت الجدد تعرضوا للاعتداء الجسدي والعاطفي والجنسي (على التوالي) خلال مرحلة الطفولة. مع ذلك فإن الأبحاث حول سلامة المراهقين وتعرضهم لسوء المعاملة محدودة في الكويت. تعد البيانات حول انتشار إساءة معاملة الأطفال بين المراهقين وتوعيتهم بخدمات الدعم أمر ضروري لضمان سلامة الأطفال في الكويت. يهدف هذا البحث إلى توفير معلومات موثوقة حول انتشار سوء معاملة الأطفال في الكويت والعوامل المتعلقة بحدوثها والاستخدام الحالي لخدمات حماية الطفل. تشمل الدراسة توزيع النسخة العربية من استبيان (اي-كاست سي) على طلاب مراهقين (عمر ١٣-١٧ سنة) في المدارس المختارة عن طريق أخذ العينات الطبقية متعددة المراحل بدولة الكويت

Background: Children’s safety is at the center of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Maltreatment of children may result in numerous health and social problems that contribute to the global burden of disease. It is estimated that one billion children worldwide have been exposed to violence in the past year. In Kuwait, studies indicate that children maltreatment occurs and one study done in 2010 showed that 35.6%, 53.5%, and 19.8% of Kuwait University freshmen were exposed to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, respectively, during childhood. However, research on the safety of adolescents and their exposure to maltreatment is limited in Kuwait. Data about the prevalence of child maltreatment among adolescents and their awareness of support services is essential in order to improve child safety in Kuwait. Aims: This research project aims to provide reliable information on the prevalence of child maltreatment among adolescents, factors related to its occurrence, and the current utilization of the existing reporting and response services in Kuwait. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire will be distributed to students aged 13-17 years in schools in Kuwait selected by multistage stratified sampling.
