Abstract English
This proposal expands on our previous project CR19-45EM-01. Due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, the research was limited to fuel characterisation and engine testing, but it was successfully completed with many publications.
Previously, we found that waste plastic and waste tire oil blends can be used as compression ignition engine fuel substitutes. However, Covid-19 prevented us from investigating particulate matter (PM), and particulate number (PN) emissions from waste-tire derived fuel blends. Using waste tires and other waste (bio)mass to generate energy is an efficient way to reduce waste disposal. However, it must be ensured that environmental benefits do not outweigh human health risks. This proposal will answer the research questions, (i) can waste energy help to mitigate waste management issues and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG), carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions? (ii) Will waste-derived biofuels be less toxic to human health? The proposed study is a continuation of the previous study that will include waste biomass preparation, including waste tires and getting biofuel from waste biomasses by pyrolysis process, pyrolysis oil upgradation, conducting comprehensive engine experiments using state-of-the-art diesel engines, and exhaust gas measuring instruments. A 1-dimensional model will be developed and compared to experimental engine performance, combustion, and exhaust emission results using GT-Suite software. The most significant and interesting part of this study is to examine the toxic effects of waste biomass-derived biofuels' exhaust on human airway epithelial cells.
| Short title | Assessment of exhaust emissions, engine performance and comparative toxicology of waste (biomass) derived fuels. |
