Abstract English

Energy efficiency in buildings is a global concern. Several international agreements and policies were drafted to promote efficient use of energy in all sectors. National efforts are stimulated by such agreements. In view of the global concerns and the national situation, the government represented by the Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) is seeking opportunities to increase energy efficiency and reduce energy wastage. This can be realized by cutting down the electrical power demand and consumption in the residential sectors since it is the major national energy consumer. Therefore, this study is proposed to address an opportunity to increase residential energy efficiency. The study aims at assessing a direct measure to reduce power and energy consumption by retrofitting domestically used incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). The study assessment will target evaluating the retrofitting option assuming that the CFLs will be distributed free of charge for all local houses. The findings of the study will include the evaluation of energy savings, reduced subsidy capital and power plant emissions. Evaluating the benefits of the study will encourage the Kuwaiti government to undertake quick fix-up solutions, such as the one proposed in this study that will aid in lowering the power demand and energy consumption. Therefore, to address global energy efficiency concerns and the national energy consumption and power demand trends that are continuously escalating, this study is proposed.
