) .)Fong, CJ., Davis, C.W., 2017

Abstract English
"This pilot study expands on the recent initiative to integrate a study skills program for students enrolled in the Foundation Program
math courses at Gulf University of Science and Technology. The previous study (Project Title: Implementation of a Study Skills
Program Integrated with a Basic Algebra Developmental Course. Project Code: PR17-16SM-02) focused on improving students’
math study skills; however, quality of instruction is also a key component of improving student success in mathematics, and more
importantly, individual student’s development of self-efficacy (Boylan, H. R., 2011). Research has also demonstrated that the level
of self-efficacy correlates to self-regulated behaviors, as well as instruction with mastery learning (Fong, C. J., Davis, C. W. (2017).
Participating Foundation Program math instructor will redesign her own instructional delivery of math concepts in a way
that guides students through the self-regulated thought processes: planning and implementation of study plans, as well
as students’ self-evaluations of their learning. She will also integrate mastery learning techniques into the classroom and
teaching assistant study hours.
The intended outcomes include the increase in individual students’ levels of self-efficacy and encourage more students
to continue on in a math sequence involving higher level mathematics, with the intention of increasing the number of
students who select majors and careers that are based in math, science and technology."
