Abstract English

Slender submarine pipelines (diameter less than 200 mm) are widely used in Kuwait and around the world for transporting power, control fluids, by-products of offshore production and data. It was found that the code of practice DNV-RP-F109 (DNV, 2010) for on-bottom stability of such pipeline results in high stabilization costs. The reason is that the code does not take into account the vertical velocity variation in boundary layer where the pipeline is resting. This problem needs to be solved. Otherwise, the pipeline design community will over design slender submarine pipelines for the purpose of hydrodynamic stability. Hence, a detailed scientific investigation on the in-line and uplift wave forces on slender submarine pipelines of different diameter, for different boundary layer thickness (i.e., different seabed roughness) and for different water depth condition is required, to come up with reliable wave force information for stability analysis. Kuwait is planning for offshore oil exploration in the future and will use many units of slender submarine pipelines. Hence solving this problem is very important for cost-effective design.
