Polymer Mortar as a Building Material

Project: General ResearchGeneral Research 2002

Project Details

Abstract English

Cement-based concrete structures often experience some kind of deterioration that causes lack of serviceability and requires repair which, in general, increases the overall cost of the structure. This is more apparent in Kuwait due to the hot marine environment. The need to utilize a new material that is more durable is increasing, especially if the material is to be manufactured using local resources. Polymers are manufactured from oil, which is available locally. The cost of polymers is decreasing annually and their properties are improving. Polymer concrete was found to be much more durable, less permeable, more chemicals-resistant, stronger in compression and tension, faster in hardening and more ductile than conventional concrete. Polymer concrete also does not require a tedious curing process and possesses better bonding properties. Polymer mortar consists of only the polymer and sand and does not contain coarse aggregates, which are not available in Kuwait. In this work, commercial polymers will be used to establish the validity of the procedure and then a special polymer will be designed for future use. The proposed work consists of: • Investigating the optimum sand to polymer ratio. • Investigating the compressive, tensile and flexural strengths of the material and the temperature effect on strength. • Investigating the cost of the new material compared with conventional concrete. • Determining the density and the permeability of the new material • Studying the possibility of using non-monolithically cast members through casting a member in two stages and comparing its strength to that of monolithically cast member. If almost the same strength is obtained, the structural members may be cast in the plant and only joints are cast on site using forms, after connecting the reinforcing steel. The forms may be removed in a few hours, the next floor may be erected the next day and no curing will be required.
