Abstract English
Due to the rapid economic development and the increased human population, the livestock population a.lso increased substantially and exceeded the carrying capacity of the rangeland in Kuwait and many arid regions. Prolong high temperatures and, human and livestock dernands has added additional pressure on the desert ecosystem of Kuwait resulting in severe depletion of vegetation cover md native biodiversity. Overgrazing is considered to be the primary cause of land degradation in Kuwait and the Arabian Peninsula and the natural forages are no longer supporting livestock gra.zing. The demands of supplementary feed for domestic livestock are high and the market price has increased significantly. Exotic forage species such as Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana) are being produced locally to accommodate the shortfall of 3forages from rangeland. These species consume large amount of irrigation water (i.e. up to 48,000 m/ha/year for Alfalfa). Therefore, it is necessary to find an altemative solution to reduce the cost and dependency on imported feed by providing local forage production for sustainable livestock industry.
To do this effectively, this project has been design to develop and utilize the natural plant biodiversity. Local indigenous grazing species are uniquely adapted md employ various physiological and morphological adaptation mechanisms to tolerate environmental stresses i.e. drou?n, high temperatures and salinity, and can control water loss. The emphasis of this project are to identifr and evaluate those indigenous plant species that have the potential to be cultivated as fodder crops under system of using minimal irrigation water. Also, to determine and recommend the agronomic cultural practices (i.e. yield, irrigation management, fertilizer and nutritional values) under Kuwait`s conditions as well as establishing a sustainable system of forages production for livestock industry; and providing local fodder production at low cost t
