Abstract English

The objective of the present study was to investigate specific aspects of sleep habits and their relation to anxiety and depression. The Sleep Habits Schedule, Kuwait University Anxiety Scale and Center for Epidemiological Studies – Depression Scale were administered to 2,584 male and female Kuwaiti secondary school students. Their mean ages are 15.93 + 1.37, 15.87 + 1.32, respectively. Based on their self-reports, they needed to sleep 9 hours, approximately the mean of actual sleeping duration at night was 7.3 hours. No gender differences were noticed in the afore-mentioned variables. Nevertheless, the mean of sleeping hours in the day time was 1.54 and 1.89 for males and females, respectively. In the same vein, the mean of the total sleep time within 24 hours was 8.86, and 9.25 hours among males and females, respectively. Statistically significant differences were found in the afore-mentioned two variables. On the other hand, the mean of number of awakenings at night, the length of latency period (pre-sleep duration), and day concentration were higher in females in proportion to males. By and large, there were significant positive relations between anxiety and depression, and abnormal aspects of sleep behavior such as number of awakenings, and pre-sleep duration, while the correlations were negative between both anxiety and depression and the normal manifestations of sleep behavior, such as the day concentration, and sufficiency of sleep amount.
