Abstract English

Hydrotreating is extensively used in petroleum refining industry for the purification of petroleum distllates and residues by the removal of undesirable contaminants such as sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen, and metals from them. In recent years, hydrotreating catalysts and processes have gained considerable importance largely because of growing environmental concerns to clean up and improve the quality of various petroleum based fuels and partly due to an increasing need for processing heavy oils to more valuable distillate products. Intensive efforts have been made to improve the performance of hydrotreating catalysts for residual oil conversion as well as for the production of environmentally friendly transportation fuels by deep desulfurization, denitrogenation and aromatics hydrogenation. The research work in this project focuses on the application of some new support materials in preparing improved hydrotreating catalysts. The emphasis of the study is on the optimization of the impregnation procedure for loading the active catalyst components and promoters on different supports. The adsorption kinetics of the active catalyst components (e.g. Mo, Ni & P) on various support materials were also investigated as part of the study. Characterization of the prepared catalysts by surface area and porosity measurements as well as by various techniques such as diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was carried out. Tests on the hydrodesulfurization activity of the prepared catalysts are in progress.
