Abstract English

It has been reported that children in Kuwait have a high incidence of Type 1 diabetes compared with children in neighbouring Arab countries, and there has been an approximately five-fold increase in incidence of the disease over the last two decades. We conducted a case-control interview in Kuwait to examine the aetiological hypotheses for Type 1 diabetes. The study included 356 Type 1 diabetes patients and a similar number of individually matched control subjects. The data were collected through a personal interview with the mothers of cases and controls using a structured questionnaire. The analyses involved standard statistical methods for individually matched case-control studies. Conditional logistic regression (and where appropriate the unconditional method) were used for the estimation of odds ratios and corresponding 95% confidence intervals, adjusting for confounding variables where necessary. Where appropriate, trends in odds ratios were determined to assess any dose-response (or dose-effect) relationship
