Abstract English

The detection of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Wuhan, China last December has spread across the globe affecting close to 700000 people as of March 29,2020. Clinical symptoms for the infection includes fever in about 90% of the cases, dry cough in 70% and fatigue reported in 40% of the cases as well as a range of other symptoms including sputum production (33%), dyspnoea (19%), sore throat (14%), headache (14%) and myalgia or arthralgia (15%). Among the many people diagnosed with CoVID-19, about 80% of reported cases in China had mild to moderate symptoms and the rest had severe and critical symptoms that included respiratory failure, septic shock, and/or multiple organ dysfunction/failure. It has also been estimated that the median incubation period for the virus ranges from five to six days and can last up to 14 days. Making the matter worse is the fact that this virus has a basic reproduction number (R0) between 2 and 3 in settings from China. Additionally, it has been reported that the virus has been detected in asymptomatic persons. On the Diamond Prince cruise ship most of the passengers and staff were tested irrespective of symptoms, 51% of the laboratory confirmed cases were asymptomatic at the time of confirmation. Similarly, 44% of the laboratory-confirmed cases in Italy have been asymptomatic. These asymptomatic cases have been responsible for many of the cases of the disease transmission in China and Italy. The main detection method has been RT-PCR which has demonstrated about 70% specificity as compared to chest -X-Ray. This main limitation in the RT-PCR detection can be caused by multiple factors that including a low viral load that makes the virus hard to detect. Given the importance of diagnosing people with COVID-19, we have been interested in developing a novel method for viral detection based on nested RT-PCR that can demonstrated higher specificity at a cheaper coast and can be manufactured locally. This will also allow us to better fight the virus and stop its spread.
