Project: General ResearchGeneral Research 2011

Project Details

Abstract English

The aim of this project is to develop a procedure for pre-commercial scale production of marine alga D. salina which has its natural occurrence in Kuwait aiming for β-carotene induction and extraction. β-carotene has high demand and value in the pharmaceutical and food industry. The success of finding the optimum culture conditions required for D. salina pre-commercial scale production and the stress factors required for β-carotene induction and extraction could result in the commercial β-carotene production in Kuwait that can be used in medicine or as a food additive. Approaches include testing D. salina maximum growth in outdoor pre-commercial scale production conditions under different salinities (40, 60, 80 and 100 psu), temperatures (20-23, 24-27 and 28-31°C) and different light intensities (25, 30 and 35x103 lux) The study also includes assessment of the stress factors or the optimum required environmental conditions for maximum β-carotene induction such as: salinities (more than 200 psu); temperatures (29-31, 34-36, 39-41 and 44-46°C); light intensities (80 to 100 x 103 lux), and a combination of optimum stress factors required for β-carotene induction. Furthermore, the study will evaluate and adopt the suitable methods for D. salina cells floculation and β-carotene extraction. Finally, the study will assess the economic viability of the project. The results of the project may contribute in providing natural β-carotene product in Kuwait market which will have a positive reflection to the economy and welfare of the Kuwaiti citizens. All experiments will be conducted at KISR’s Al-Khairan station.
