Abstract English

Catalytic hydrotreating processes have an important role in the petroleum refining industry. They are used widely to treat various petroleum cuts. Kuwait refining industry has over 250,000 bbl/day capacity assigned for residual oil hydrotreating processes, where a large fraction of this capacity is processed by the ARDS units alone. The improvement of the performance of these units can be through the selection of better catalyst systems that are more reactive and more stable towards deactivation. To achieve that, a methodology to screen new catalyst systems should be available. This proposal addresses the research planned to be conducted to optimize the conditions for accelerating the deactivation of the catalyst system at the start-of-run conditions, which is attributed to coke formation. Hence, the acceleration of the test will be attempted by systematic studies of the effects of increasing the severity of operating conditions. Success in developing a short and effective accelerated test will enable KISR to meet KNPC requirements in investigating new catalyst systems more efficiently in the future.
